Martin Audio was founded to manufacture & install live performance loudspeakers for the supergroups of the 1970’s and quickly became the trusted sound choice for Pink Floyd & The Who to tour with and be heard effectively. These systems were designed to inspire mass audiences around the world and spurred a decades-long foray of influence on the art of Rock ’n’ Roll.
In 1991, the Ministry of Sound opened its doors, taking major cues and inspiration from one of the most iconic clubs in the history of dance music... The Paradise Garage was located in New York City and fronted by Larry Levan. This institution became an essential outpost for all types of people to let loose, enjoy life, and experience music in an entirely new way. The club was crucial to the birth of House and was notably built around a custom-designed sound system.
Fresh from spending time in New York during the 80’s, Justin Berkmann came back to London eager to replicate the Paradise Garage experience. Ministry was then conceived as an arena purely dedicated to sound. Berkmann stated, "My concept for Ministry was purely this: 100% sound system first.” They chose Martin Audio.
The now famous Martin Audio Wavefront system draws hundreds of thousands of people to an out-of-the-way corner of southeast London each year. It won ‘Best Club Sound System’ at the International Dance Music Awards from 2010 to 2013 (every year they ran the category), and was paramount in driving the success of arguably the most famous dance-music venue in the world.
MARTIN AUDIO HISTORY
The Ministry of Sound, London
Ministry’s main room, called ‘the Box’, carries our available for rent flagship Martin Audio W8C mid-high tops and custom designed single 18” folded horns that were modeled after our Martin Audio WSX 18” Bass Bin enclosures, but the story doesn’t stop there.
Electronic music band The Prodigy’s front of house engineer Jon Burton collaborated with Martin’s Research & Development director Jason Baird to commission new 21” subs for the world's most bass centric band. These monoliths later became the custom ASX model used at Ministry to extend powerful and accurate bass response lower than ever before.
Prodigy’s FOH Jon Burton - “We wanted to maximize the impact of the low end, but in a directional way to avoid noise propagation across the entire site. We always require more than the normal number of subs provided by the festival, in this case SSE, so always intended bringing in extra.”
You don’t need to be an expert to appreciate how incredible this rig is. The towering speaker stacks, several million watts of bass, and triple-thick absorbing walls ensure sure you get the message. It’s an authentically unique sensation you need to hear, see, and feel to believe. This used to require a trip to the most iconic wooden dance floor in South London, but now you can experience the magic for yourself by renting with Gateway Sound Collective.
